Modo were told by the group head of purchasing at Universal that they were expecting to see fines introduced for non eco friendly packaging. There was not a brief, but it was part of the inspiration that led to the development of the Act-Pac.

Always looking into new packaging ideasm in 2003 Modo came across a new material called Paperfoam, and started the development of the Act-Pac. Modo embarked on a process of tool design and prototypes that lasted three years.

It was clear early on that the trays would need to be machine gluable in order to keep the costs down. We therefore held early trials with prototypes on the same gluing machines that place the plastic version of the tray at printers in Germany and the UK.

In the end, launching a product using a completely biodegradeable material that can be injection moulded, Modo developed a true alternative to the existing Digipack format.
